The Maryland State Education Association (MSEA) is set to visit Charles County Public Schools (CCPS), Friday, March 8, in honor of Read Across America Month. Representatives from MSEA are set to visit Dr. Thomas L. Higdon Elementary School to donate books for the school’s use purchased through a grant by the National Education Association (NEA). Members from MSEA will arrive at the school around 9:30 a.m., visit classrooms and read to students. During the month of March, MSEA is celebrating and encouraging a love of reading by donating a total of nearly 500 new books to schools throughout Maryland. The books feature authors, protagonists, historical events and fiction that reflect student diversity.

MSEA designed its Read Across America program to help support students from historically underserved communities across the state. MSEA is a state affiliate of the NEA, which began Read Across America 25 years ago to bring the joys of reading to students of all ages and make children feel valued and welcomed by celebrating diverse readers and books. Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading.

CCPS highlights Read Across Charles County annually, with guest readers visiting schools and classrooms to read their favorite books to students. On Friday, March 1, CCPS celebrated Read Across Charles County Day.
