Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) will support its community partners this weekend at the Healthy Kids Fun Fest. Held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7, at North Point High School, the event celebrates ways in which children can make healthy choices, how families can support those choices and incorporate them at home, at school and in the community.
CCPS staff will be available at the Fun Fest to talk about healthy eating with free samples and lead physical education and wellness activities.
“Healthy eating in childhood is essential for a person’s development and ongoing good health,” Superintendent of School Maria V. Navarro, Ed.D., said. “As children continue to grow and develop their minds and bodies, making healthy choices will only benefit them.”
Earlier this week, representatives of the Charles County Branch of the NAACP, Charles County Department of Health, the American Heart Association and the Center for Science in the Public Interest, accepted a proclamation from the Charles County Commissioners recognizing October as National Children’s Health Month.
Presented by the Charles County Commissioners, the proclamation recognizes that children need care and guidance to grow up healthy and safe, as well as recognizing that community organizations such as CCPS are taking steps to ensure children are introduced to and develop healthy eating and exercise habits that will benefit them throughout their lives. Part of the mission of the Healthy Kids Fun Fest is to provide families with information about making healthy dietary choices while dining out.
“In the busy world we live in, it’s important for families to have access to easy healthy choices and having more healthy options at restaurants is one way to do just that," Laura Hale, state government relations director for Maryland for the American Heart Association.
“It’s important that children be introduced to healthy foods and start building healthy habits when they are young,” Katie Marx, Center for Science in the Public Interest policy associate, said. “Charles County can support children’s health by ensuring kids have access to healthy food options across the board, including at home, at school and at restaurants.”
